Location and The Hotel Grounds
The Island Palms Hotel & Marina is ideally located on Shelter Island, along with the Bay Club, Humphry's Half Moon Inn and the Kona Kai. San Diego's Hawaiian Isle. They take pride in providing excellent service in a tranquil, casual, California setting. The hotel guests can unwind at either of their two Bayside pools and spas, work out in the fitness center or take a stroll around Shelter Island. From an architecture standpoint there are three different styles of buildings on the property. Each has its own lobby and the room decor varies with the building: the tropical Island Palms style, the Mediterranean style Casa del Mar, or their fabulous Casa Marina style. When making your reservation it would be wise to identify which hotel you would prefer and which style room you would enjoy most.
The grounds of the hotel are very accessible from the moment you roll in from the parking lot as well as around Shelter Island. When entering the Island Palms (I believe this is the main lobby) look for the awesome water fall to your right. Then to your left is the check-in desk with an accessible check-in desk to the right of the main check-in desk. The staff here are very accommodating so please don't hesitate to let them know what you need.
The Hotel Restaurant and Ball/Meeting room
The hotel restaurant is called Blue Wave Bar and Grill. It is straight ahead as you roll in the front entrance but you will notice that it has stairs that lead up to its own lobby. In order to get to this restaurant you will have to go through a door that leads out to the pool then turn right after some landscaping. There you will see a two piece ramp that goes to the patio of the Blue Wave, where there is a side door to the dining area. If traveling alone please ask one of the front desk staff to notify the restaurant staff so they can find place for you at a table while going around to the side door. The hotel also has a Ballroom/meeting room below the restaurant. It is best accessed by going to the lobby of the Blue Wave where you will find a lift that will take you down below.
Hotel Rooms
I was able to see two different types rooms: a Junior suite (426) and a standard room (587). Both had lots of room to maneuver around. Also they were in different building styles. Room 426 was in the Casa Del Mar Building and room 587 was in the Casa Marine Building on the second floor. They were both very nice and very well laid out. It seems to me that these building are newer and had the accessible rooms. The Island palms style buildings are pretty but are older and unable to be renovated for any accessible rooms.
Room 426
The first room I checked was room 426 the Junior Suite. It is the size of a studio apartment, a home away from home. It has a king size bed which is a good height to get in from your wheelchair. The living area has a lot of space to move around in your wheelchair. There is a dining room with a dining set to fit a family of four. You may want to have someone move the table over to the window so you can use everything that is in or on the counter area which includes a microwave, a refrigerator and a coffee/tea maker. This room has a very nice patio looking at the pool, the marina and the hills of Point Loma. To keep the landscape looking nice I wouldn’t recommend rolling or walking over the grass to just get over on the path or the pool.
The Bathroom of 426
The bathroom has a lot of space to maneuver around with easy to reach towels and grab bars by the toilet. The roll-in shower is also pretty big with gab bars and it has a curtain to keep your wheelchair dry. You may want someone to move over the little cabinet closer to the sink so you could put your toiletries away more conveniently. As well as moving the bath chair into the shower and lowering the shower head.
Room 587
The second room I looked at is 587 this is more of a standard hotel room except it is bigger for you to maneuver your wheelchair around. It has a special button out side on the left of the entry door for you who happens to be deaf or hearing impaired. It helps you know when someone is at the door. The light flickers when the door bell is activated.. The door it self has low peep hole. The room has two queen size beds and at an accessible height. This room has just about everything you might need and the items are easy to reach on the counter and desk space. These include flat screen TV, microwave, refrigerator and coffee/tea maker.
The Bathroom of 587
This is also a big bathroom with everything you need; it has easy to reach towels, low sink with plenty of counter space, roll-in shower with grab bars and the ADA toilet with grab bars. Please make sure the shower chair is in the room and in the shower when you check in. Plus have the bell person lower the shower head when you get to the room.
