The Grounds of Disneyland Hotel
The hotel is conveniently located in near proximity to Downtown Disney and is directly across the street from the California Grand Hotel. This was the first hotel build next to Disneyland in the early 1960’s, it was not purchased by Disney until 1988. The Adventure tower was the first high-rise built in Anaheim. If you are a history buff, you can read more about the history of this hotel by clicking on this link The Disneyland hotel pass.
The Lobby of the Hotel
The main lobby for all three towers is in the Fantasy Tower. This is where you will check in. The lobby has a gift shop and large reception area and has an accessible check-in desk. The reception area includes a nice cozy spot where children can watch a Disney movie while waiting for their parents to check in or out. There is big gift shop and also a mini-mart. The cast members (staff) are very helpful and willing to go out of their way to make your stay a magical experience. From the lobby you have direct access to the grounds and the exhibition hall which has ballrooms for weddings, conventions and other celebrations. In the hallways of this building are historic photographs and shadow boxes of old souvenirs that illustrate the hotel’s history. There are three restaurants, Goofy’s Kitchen, Steakhouse 55 & Lounge, and The Coffee House. Goofy’s Kitchen is a character buffet dinning experience where you meet Goofy and the Disney family and eat all you want. It is very easy to maneuver in the buffet area but if you do happen to need help, the cast members will be glad to help you. Steakhouse 55 & Lounge is a higher-end restaurant and the accessibility there was fine as well. The Coffee House is more of a fast-food environment with counter service. It is very small and it was hard to maneuver my wheelchair in this location. The two other towers have their own lobbies which are much smaller but still provide a place for you to wait for your friends or just relax. The lobbies are decorated in themes that match the towers names. So, the magic starts long before you take that elevator up to your room.
Room 2761
I had the pleasure of staying in room 2761 in the Adventure Tower and I have to say that this was the most fantastic experience I’ve ever had in an accessible room. During my stay I did not ever have difficulty maneuver in this room. The beds were at exactly the correct height for transferring from my chair. The lamps and desk were very easy to use. The closet was a bit small but easy to use because the hanger bar is at the right height. The whole room was decked out with Mickey-themed décor utilizing Mickey’s hands and the outline of his head and there were lots of photos of Walt Disney on the walls. The headboard was a carving of the Disney Castle with a display of flickering fireworks that continuously changed. Don’t worry; there is a switch to turn off the headboard when you are ready to go to sleep. It is conveniently located on the lamp between the beds, one switch for the lamp, one for the headboard, so you don’t have to sleep under the fireworks. The rug is woven with a themed design, and I will let you figure out what that design is. And last but not least, the room has a wonderful view of the Disneyland resort itself.
The Bathroom of 2761
The design under the sink also caused some trouble because the wood installed to prevent injury from the pipes actually prevented me from getting close enough to the sink. So either spit hard or stand up a bit and lean over the sink! The sink continues the Mickey theme from the room. His hands hold the light fixture and the water controls are his ears. There is plenty of counter space for your toiletries and if you happen to forget something, the hotel will happily provide it for you. The roll-in shower was very good with the exception of the shower curtain design. Once you are on the shower bench, it is very difficult to close the curtain because of the way it is hung. There are two sets of controls in the shower, one for switching between the higher and lower shower heads and one for the water temperature. These controls also feature Mickey’s ears. The grab bar runs around the parameter of the shower enclosure leaving the wall behind the shower chair clear which makes it easier to wash your hair. The shower floor (tile) was not at all slippery and I could transfer from my chair to the shower bench with ease. However, the tile in the rest of the bathroom is not non-slip treated so I would highly recommend you bring a toilet mat for transferring from your chair to the toilet.
If you are not confined to a wheelchair, you will be able to enjoy this room on your own. If you are confined to a wheelchair, you might want to bring a friend to help you.
