The Ground, Lobby and Location

The Hilton San Diego Resort offers impeccably appointed rooms on an 18-acre park. Enjoy lush gardens, rolling lawns and sandy beaches just steps from your door. It is just six miles from the San Diego International Airport, and right on San Diego's famous Mission Bay. This Four-Diamond San Diego, California resort and spa is conveniently located one mile from San Diego SeaWorld.  Roll along the boardwalk of beautiful Mission Bay. Relax around a fire pit at Acqua, their newly designed restaurant while you view Mission Bay and enjoy their California cuisine. If you drive, there are 11 accessible parking spaces here so hopefully no sweet there on parking. There is more detailed information at this link ADA INFORMATION.This Hilton has a unique lobby with inner and outer areas. As you roll up to the entrance you will see that the outer area is a waiting area which is just under a roof with no windows or doors. The front desk is in the inner lobby to the left past the columns and the tile flooring makes it very smooth for wheelchairs.  There is an accessible desk that you can use if you need to when you check in (it is called the concourse desk) or, the staff is happy to assist you at the regular front desk. The gift shop is on the right side of the check-in desk. It has three levels and there is ramp access to all three.  As you exit the outer lobby there is a koi pond to enjoy. To the right of the outer lobby there is a big patio that you can relax on, and at the end of the patio there is a ramp to the left of that leads to the pool area.  (In the picture the gate is on the right but coming down the ramp it will be on your left.) Another ramp leads from the pool directly to the Mission Bay boardwalk and marina. Please click on the photo to look around.

Accessible Rooms and Room 202

Each room features a large balcony (or patio if you are on the ground level). They come appointed with either a king or two queen-sized beds, high speed Internet access, a coffee maker, a 42 inch flat screen television with in-room movies, a iron and ironing board, voice mail, Evelyn & Crabtree amenities and an in-room safe. There are four roll-in shower rooms.  The ADA rooms are not all the same; some of the ADA compliant than others, so if you have specific needs, please be sure to make those arrangements when you reserve your room.  Some of the ADA features include door mats that have been built into the entry-way tile to make it easy to access the room if you are in a wheelchair.  Most rooms have both a regular height and lower peep hole.

The room that I inspected is room 202. It has plenty of space to maneuver your wheelchair. The king size bed is an adequate height for transfering from your chair. The counter you see with the flat screen TV is very accessible for almost everything; even the mirror is low. There are drawers underneath the TV and a mini refrigerator is under the counter below the mirror. The louvered doors to the right of the bathroom are to the closet which has a lowered hanging bar for your clothes and an accessible safe.(If you think you'll need to use the iron, be sure to have the bellman move it to a more accessible spot when you arrive; it is too high to reach from a sitting position.) The wide patio with two lounge chair provides a nice view in every direction. The photos of the patio in the Picture Gallery will show A view of the Mission Bay out to the left and the view to the right is of other rooms and the beautiful grounds. The hotel does not recommend that you access the lawn from your patio if you are in a wheelchair as the grounds can become difficult to manuever across when it is wet.

The Bathroom

The bathroom has a wide doorway and the door swings out rather than into the bathroom to provide adequate room to maneuver your wheelchair. The sink is very easy to access and there is a large mirror that allows you to see yourself from a sitting position.  The toilet area has grab bars on the side and back of the commode.  Although you cannot see it in these photos, there is a phone and the towels are within easy reach. The shower is big and has a fold down bench. A really nice feature is the two shower controls.  One is located closer to the bench and other is located on the side wall to accomodate both wheelchair and able bodied guests. Please take a tour by clicking on the pictures.
