Locaction, Ground and Lobby

Ever dream of going to the Pacific Islands and at the same time, wish you could be at Walt Disney World but you just couldn't decide which place to go to on vacation?  Well that problem is solved right here at the Polynesian Resort.  You can experience the feeling of being on a Pacific island and still enjoy all the wonders Disney World has to offer.

The Polynesian has blooming gardens with all the beauty and color of the tropics. This is one way the resort says "Aloha" and it will remind you of the way life is on a pacific island. The resort is located across the Seven Seas Lagoon from the Magic Kingdom theme park. There are 11 buildings called longhouses which are also referred to as "Islands" since they are named after islands in the Pacific. The Islands are either two or three stories with a total of 853 rooms. The first-floor rooms have patios and the upper-floors have balconies. The lobby is in the Great Ceremonial House, a large two-level building with shops and restaurants that also contains a large botanical display including a waterfall.  You can see more details by simply clicking on the link provided on this page. The photo for the ground and lobby will be added in the near future. Please click on room pictures to see the gallery.

The Rooms

Now, let's talk about the accessible rooms.  The Polynesian has excellent accessible accomodations. There are two types of accessible rooms, one has a tub and the other has a roll-in shower.  Be sure to be specific about which type of bathroom you need when you make your reservations.  If you do not, you wil simply be put in an accessible room and may not get the one you need.  There are 13 rooms with tubs with grab bars and 11 rooms with roll-in showers with grab bars. The rooms I visited were 1118 and  1121.

Room 1121.

Desk with lamp with outlets for lap top & internet service. On the right of the desk is a flat screen TV with cable and a chest of drawers.  There is a couch that folds out into a day bed. The glass sliding door leads out to a patio which looks out into a beautiful tropical garden. When you see the Pictures in gallery you will see that there is plenty of room to maneuver between the 2 queen-size beds with your wheelchair. The night stand has a strobe light alarm clock and a TTY phone. The entry door has a low peep hole and the hallway has two closets on each side of a mini bar with a small refrigerator and shelves for wine bottles in the cabinet below.

 The bathroom

A beautiful accessible sink. You can see the towels on the right of the photo, they are at a good heightand easy to reach. The tub has two grab bars on the far wall and one above the shower control,  there is a hand held shower head and a nice thick shower curtain.  (Please note that shower benches are available on request so you need to do that when you make your reservation.) There an ADA toilet in its own small alcove right next to the bathroom door with a grab bar on each side. I personally liked this bathroom because it sort of reminded me of my own bathroom at home.

Room #1118

In this room the beds appeared to be lower than the beds in 1121, other than that the are the same queen size beds and the living area is the same as room 1121. This room has a button to operate the entry door from the inside and the door will automatically close a few seconds after you pass through it.  (You will need to manually open the entry door from the outside. Another difference in 1118 from 1121 is the closets have sliding doors instead of double doors.

The Bathroom

This bathroom has a roll-in shower with grab bars and a fold down bench. The shower has two corner shelves and the controls are easy to reach . The shower head is adjustable (using hooks instead of the usual sliding rail) and the shower curtain is the same great thick curtain as in room 1121. The sink is pretty much the same as room 1121 but it doesn’t have a shelf below the mirror.  The towels are stored on a higher rack than I could reach from my chair, so be sure to make a request for the towels to be moved to a more accessible position when you make your reservations. The toilet is part of the main bathroom in this room (not alone in an alcove) and there is a grab bar on only one side.
