The Location and Grounds

Welcome to one of the best locations on Shelter Island and San Diego Bay. The accessibility to all areas of this hotel is fantastic. It is near restaurants and Humphrey's Outdoor Concernt venue which is next door.style="font-size: 110%;" Guests enjoy the use of the hotel's pool, spa and fitness facilities. Other amenities include complimentary wireless internet access and morning coffee (self-serve). There are accessible parking spaces next to the lobby entrance and in the underground parking garage. Enjoy culinary creativity in their elegant onsite restaurant "The Bay Club Bar & Grill", or venture out to discover the excitement of the many fine restaurants in the greater San Diego area. Renovations are planned in the near future.

 The Lobby

Accessibility approaching and entering the lobby is great. There is a ramp to the right of the lobby that leads to the entrance to the underground parking garage, or, there is an elevator from the parking garange as well. Unfortunately the check-in desk is not accessible, so please ask for assistance. The lobby is very large and has and inviting open air feeling and houses a restaurant, lounge and gift shop. The hotel restaurant "The Bay Club Bar & Grill" is a step or two lower than the lobby area but is readily accessible via the ramp to the left of the restaurant next to the elevator.  Look for a piano, and if you dine at off hours you may just glimpse the whimsical "piano player", a life-size doll that looks like he is ready to start playing a song at any moment. In the Lounge there is a fireplace with tables with the added feature of a low bar so you can pull your wheelchair right on up and have a drink or two.

The Room

The Bay Club Hotel has developed quite a reputation for its spacious guest rooms, each with a great vantage point to enjoy the marina or San Diego Bay. The rooms are sufficiently comfortable in size for a wheelchair to maneuver around. (You can see me in my wheelchair in the second photo from the left below, touring the room.) The bed in this room is relatively low and appears to be an easy transfer from a wheelchair. The room lights are accessible and the floor lamp has been shortened for your convenience. The patio is easily accesssible but may be too small to accomodate two wheelchairs.  For other information about other amenities for all rooms please click here.

The Bathroom

The bathroom is really two rooms; one houses a sink and large counter (under which you will find the refrigerator) and the other is for the toilet and tub. The sink and counter top are high enough for a wheelchair to get under and there is plenty of room to lay out your toiletries. The room is just large enough for one wheelchair and you may have to back out once you are in there. The room with the toilet and tub is also rather small but the tub is accessible and there are grab bars on the walls. The toilet is ADA compliant with grab bars on the walls nearby and towels are accessible from the tub.Rememeber to ask the bell person assisting you at check-in to lower the shower head and to be sure the bath chair is in the tub. Please remember to make any special needs requests when you make your reservations to be sure that everything you need is available and also placed in your room before check-in.
